Ace Combat 3 Electrosphere (PAL)

Ace Combat 3: Electrosphere (JP)

Flight Simulator/Arcade

3rd installment in the Ace combat series. The export (EU & US) releases lack the animated cutscenes and the story of the JP version. The Japanese release consists of 2 CD's of Ace Combat goodness with animation (and some aircraft design) done by Production IG, multiple characters, branching storylines, 5 different endings and has the only Ace Combat mission that takes place in outer space

a team is trying to translate the game

Action/Adventure

Made by the team who made Landstalker for the Genesis/Mega Drive. Features similar elements of adventure and puzzling. A great 2D Zelda-like with quite a mature storyline. Stay away from the sequel though, as it's generally agreed to be a huge step down from this.

Action/Adventure

An Action/Adventure game with RPG elements. Has a Kirby-like premise that lets you copy the moves of your enemies (only one, but you can overwrite it) to help solve puzzles, gain different attributes, or tear through enemies with ease. You also learn battle techniques (which you can always use after learning them) from people you save throughout the game. There's also in-game collectables to buy.

Breath of Fire 3 (PAL)

Breath of Fire 3

RPG

The third in Capcom's solid (and now dead) RPG series. If you never played 1 or 2, you'll miss a few references, but this is its own story. A bit slow paced, but if you like classic RPGs and dragons, go for it. Has alot of skills and spells to learn, some which can combine in battle for huge damage. Later on, you can "splice" Dragon Genes to power up in battle. Has a European PSP port.

N

Breath of Fire 4 (PAL

Breath of Fire 4

RPG

Last of the traditional BoF games. You'll find it has a little better pacing than BoF3, and the Fou-Lu missions are a blast. Made on the same engine as 3, now with a different, but still cool, art-style (offset by some polygonal bosses), and a replacement for genes that's powered up by... mini-games. Still, it's a pretty good story worth seeing to the end. Has a PC port.

Created by Capcom, a 4 button fighting game where characters from both companies duke it out, has an exceptional soundtrack, and you can use the "original" bgm for some characters like the Art of Fighting crew or Fatal Fury, same on the Capcom side. A must try if you haven't yet.

Platformer/RPG

One of the earliest Metroidvania/Castleroid genre entries and one of the most famous. Something's up in Dracula's Castle and it's up to his son Alucard to investigate. Very fun, but gets laughably easy towards the end. Ported to XBLA and included in Dracula X Chronicles for PSP with a slightly different translation.

Chocobo Racing (PAL)

Chocobo Racing

Racing

This game was a shameless advertisement for Chocobo's Dungeon 2, but it is surprisingly fun for a knock-off "kart" racer. Features nice control, fun characters, and upbeat music, including remixed tracks from other Final Fantasy games, even some that hadn't officially come out overseas yet.

N

N (GER)

Chocobo's Dungeon 2

Chocobo's Dungeon 2

RPG

Chocobo's Dungeon 2 is a surprisingly decent roguelike. You traverse dungeons, find items to increase your strength, and magic books to cast spells. The game can get a little repetitive, but trudging through the dungeons to get to the bosses is also mildly addicting.

N

Chrono Cross

Chrono Cross

RPG

There is a very mixed reception to this game from fans of Chrono Trigger. The storyline is sadly quite DEEP. There are also several arguably unnecessary characters. On the other hand, there are also very charming characters. The gameplay features a lot of things meant to relieve the tediousness of your average role playing games. There is virtually no grinding in this game, for instance, as characters don't really level up in typical fashion.

Croc Legend of the Gobbos (PAL)

Croc: Legend of the Gobbos

Fully 3D, roaming platformer. Gameplay wise, this is arguably as solid as Mario 64, as long as you use analog sticks. Otherwise, you'll likely run into some hard jumps. Be sure to save your fuzzy pals to get the true ending. Also on saturn and PC. Sequel has better controls, but changed quite a few things. Both have some really AWFUL GBC ports. Don't bother with them.

Digimon World (PAL)

Digimon World

RPG

Essentially, this amounts to Tamagotchi with a lot of exploration. The "Digimon World" is a huge land with tons of secrets. The goal of the game is to recruit Digimon to revive File City. Although a bit unforgivingly difficult at first, once you start recruiting some Digimon, the game is extremely addicting.

Digimon World 2 is a good sequel though very different. It's a dungeon crawling RPG where you can recruit different digimon to fight for you(up to three per battle). What's intersesting is that there's a cap for each digimon and to raise that cap you have to start fusing them ending up with a different party all the time.

Digimon World 3 is a run of a mill JRPG. Not bad but load times do hurt it.

Dragon Seeds -U--front

Dragon Seeds

RPG

In the distant future, the fossilized remains of a dragon are found in the polar ice caps. The fossil, containing trace amounts of DNA, is cloned. A new dragon is born. Years pass, and more dragons are cloned. Thanks to the chaotic DNA of the original clone, there are now many "classes" of dragons. These dragons are cloned and trained for combat as a form of entertainment.

You are a Dragonsage, newly arrived in the largest city on the continent. Your journey begins as you choose your own dragon to clone, train it to become unstoppable, and overthrow the current champion.

Shop for your dragon, and equip it with a weapon and shield. Head to Isuka's Junk Shop to purchase rare stat-boosters and weapons. Train your dragon virtually, or through tests of patience and timing. Combat is "semi-realtime", as both sages input commands, which the dragons execute simultaneously during battle. This chaotic style of combat makes it so that even a weaker dragon can overpower a stronger dragon, so long as the sage planned accordingly.

Prepare yourself. A new age is dawning.

Final Fantasy in a futuristic world of magic mixed with technology, where you play as a group of rebels against an evil corporation. Metal Gear Solid

Action/Adventure

The dawn of mainstream stealth gaming and more cinematic experiences in games. Play as Solid Snake as he infiltrates Shadow Moses to stop high tech special forces unit FOXHOUND from carrying out a nuclear strike. Great plot, great voice acting, solid gameplay. WARNING: not for people who cannot abide long cutscenes. Updated on Gamecube with amazing graphics and better.. everything.

Even though it is available in the European Store, STAY AWAY FROM DOWNLOADING THIS if you are from either France, Germany or Italy, as it comes in the horrible localization with FULLY synchronized voices.

Monsterrancher2

Monster Rancher 2

RPG

Monster Rancher 1 was really an innovative game. Insert CDs, obtain monsters, battle with other ones using the game's unique battle system. Monster Rancher 2 is more or less simply an improvement over that, but it was a notably big improvement. The game looks a lot better, there are tons more monsters, and tons more events as a whole. It is a shame that the series has somewhat gone downhill.

Sentinel Returns

If you understand what the fuck is going on, then all power to you. This thing is simple, yet incredibly fun, and there are over six hundred levels. You enter an alien landscape, and from the eyes of a stationary robot "host", you absorb trees [the local form of energy] and build a linear tower of boulders until you can see eye-to-eye with the titular Sentinel. This succeeds the Atari game "The Sentinel", and features a vast improvement in graphics. Perhaps the most outstanding point in this game is its incredible, thick-as-molasses atmosphere, to which the score, composed by none other than famed director John Carpenter, contributes in no small way. An excellent way to pass long hours when you're too jittery to read Lovecraft but you want something with the same vibe.
