Revision as of 12:40, 5 December 2012

Even though translators and romhackers have a history of delays due to personal issues, there's nothing wrong with hoping for a finished product, and cheering those who put in the effort along the way. This is a page for both Translations and Romhacks that are currently incomplete, but in the process of completion (though hopefully they have not been entirely abandoned). Put any interesting games or hacks that you know about in their proper section that you think are worth sharing and getting excited for. Or better yet, make yourself useful to these translation groups. If a general date is announced for estimated completion time, try to include that as well, though it isn't always a given, as mentioned above.

For games particularly of the visual novel genre, there's a dedicated site that does the job for us, so no need to update them here. Link

7th Dragon

7thdragon battle

RPG You create a guild with a party of four tasked to rid Eden of its dragon problems. Plays almost identically to Etrian Odyssey, but now with a Dragon Quest-style overworld. Has tons of dynamic skills, like synergies, exhausts and reaction abilities, which make for broken parties. There's also fucking annoying red flowers EVERYWHERE that reduce your HP by a set percentage when stepped on. The art style is nothing short of adorable as Atlus hired an outside artist to handle its design process. It's possible to play without a translation patch with some knowledge of EO and use of the translated skills and quests wiki. Active project (incomplete patch released)
Ace Attorney Investigations: Miles Edgeworth: Prosecutor's Path

Aai2-screen

Adventure An adventure game for the Nintendo DS, and the sequel to Ace Attorney Investigations: Miles Edgeworth. You play as the eponymous prosecutor Edgeworth as he and his assistant Kay Faraday solve cases by investigating crime scenes, gathering evidence and confronting suspects and witnesses. Active project
Arabian Nights: Sabaku no Seirei

Arabian nights sabaku no seirei ou screen

RPG A curious JRPG based on Arabian lore. Not much too much storywise is known to those outside of the original translator group and a handful of others, but here goes: You play as Shukran, a young girl, who desires world peace. She seeks to obtain this goal by allying with mystic spirits to kill the Earth Mother Goddess. ...What? Well, the story makes sense in context. The neat thing about this game is that battles play like normal RPG fare, but you also use cards to affect enemies and allies with various effects and also the battlefield toward your favor. The Final Battle ???, the translating group hasn't posted any signs of life since September 2009 and nobody seems to have taken up their mantle...

ASH: Archaic Sealed Heat

ASH battle

Tactical RPG Mistwalker's first DS title. The kingdom of Milinear is razed to the ground during a crowning ceremony of which you, the princess, are the only soul to survive. From the ashes you can reanimate loyal ashen warriors to fight alongside you. Political intrigue abound. The gameplay is standard fare for tactical RPGs, bearing likeness to SMT: Devil Survivor's party system in that you need to kill the leader to dismantle a squad. It has some pretty terrible stylus-only controls which are further plagued by confirmation screens, forcing you to tap shit twice. Still, it's a solid TRPG if you can look past its flaws. Active project (?) (beta stage, translation 100% complete)

Devil Summoner: Soul Hackers

SMTSoulhackers

RPG A much improved sequel to the original Devil Summoner on the Saturn. The game's premise is around a new virtual reality game called Paradigm X, inside of which user's souls are vanishing after playing. Your group the "Spookies" decides to hack into its mainframe with GUMPs (GUn coMPuters) to see what's up. During your venture into the online world your friend Hitomi is possessed by the sexy demoness Nemissa, but the protagonist is the only one who notices her change. It's pretty much .hack in the Shin Megami Tensei universe. A lot of elements are refined but combat and demon loyalty are still somewhat tedious. Active project (latest update: February 2011 / project website)
Fire Emblem: Shin Monshou no Nazo: Hikari to Kage no Eiyuu

FE12

SRPG

AKA Fire Emblem 12. To tell a bad joke, it's the Fire Emblem that made Nintendo abandon any plan for localization just by looking at the title. The game itself is good old Fire Emblem yarn - weapon triangle, permadeath,... you know the deal. New to the series is Casual Mode which eliminates permadeath and a self-customized Player's character called "My Unit" (or "Avatar", going by Nintendo's official term) that was carried over to Fire Emblem 13.

Translation efforts of older games in the series are kept track on its own wiki page.

Project completed on Nov 21st 2012.

Front Mission 2

FM2 gs

Tactical RPG Imagine a proto-Front Mission 3 with a heavier focus on the story, and a crushing atmosphere rife with realism. Front Mission 2 takes place in Alordesh after the events of the 2nd Huffman Conflict (Front Mission). After the war the anti-OCU sentiment reached a breaking point and the Alordeshi military staged a coup d'état. This failed, however, leading up to a second coup attempt in 2102. You explore this unrest as OCU pilot Ash Faruk. There are several main character paths to follow which culminate in the ending. The game is utterly massive, most missions requiring hours to complete as it pits you against several dozen enemies on any given map. Even so, its grandiose plot and scale are something that give it eminence among the series, making it one of Japan's best kept secrets. 2013 (Current status:100% Missions, 100% Tutorials, special events only)

Front Mission: Alternative

FMA gs

RTS A spin-off of the Front Mission series, Alternative is somewhat of an odd duck in the franchise. Ditching the tactical turn-based elements, the game is played in real time with the player controlling the AI of their platoons and issuing waypoints to move to. Alternative did refine and innovate on a lot of elements like the range system which alters weapon accuracy based on distance, adding tons of item diversity (night vision, radar jamming and cloaking equipment), and introducing Cockpit mode which lets you view battlefields in first-person view, which is pretty cool. Has a solid ranking system like 3, which adds to its replayability. Abandoned pre-production phases (in queue)

Glory of Heracles 4: Gift from the Gods

Heracles 4

RPG Considered one of the Greek JRPG series' strongest entries and technically the closest thing to the DS game. The most intriguing aspect is that the hero loses his body after Pandora's Box is opened and everything goes Grecian batshit. Throughout the game you are constantly changing bodies (and not always male OR human either!) as you quest to regain your body and uncover the truth behind the Pandora's Box incident and the mysterious Almore. Heracles also returns as usual to lend a hand to the forces of good and he's as ready to kick ass as ever was. Video ???, recent developments have been able to work with coding issues, and progress is moving along, though an actual date has not been unveiled yet.

Kyuuyaku Megami Tensei

Dds blog10

RPG

A MegaTen game so it speaks for itself. This time it's Super Famicom remake of first two games in the series - Megami Tensei 1 and 2. Both games are roots for whole Megaten franchise. This is especially true in a case of Megami Tensei II where it began to take shape as we know today. Graphics and sound were improved in comparison with their Famicom counterparts. There are also few new gameplay features added to this remake.

Active project. Script has been translated and project is in the rom hacking stage. Overall translation is quite advanced There is no release date but DDS assured that he won't let this project die. He had busy time lately so project has been dragged out.

LovePlus / LovePlus+

Loveplus side

Dating Sim CANNOT HAVE CAN have! Your very own waifu that will love you even if you're an unkempt, jobless mess, provided you show her enough attention. Crazy in-depth when you have certain features enabled; like Real Time Mode, where your love interest becomes aware of meeting arrangements of real dates and time. This level of interaction has proven to be fantastic immersion, and helpful with ensnaring feeble minded otakus.

Complete project (100% complete, You can find the patch here. )

Mitsumete Knight

Mitsumete

Dating Sim/RPG/Strategy "Spiritual Successor of Tokimeki Memorial. A Medieval/Heroic Fantasy story-driven non-H Dating Sim where Anyone Can Die." Everything is cute and cheery on the surface, but horribly miserable and depressing on the inside thanks to a war-torn world filled with corruption and manipulation. You alone can stand for what's right, leading by example to help others and stand as testament for good will OR you can even say fuck that and not even do so. This is a colossal game, with 22 different endings and many, MANY paths, decisions, and options to enter. Not only that, but there's also RPG-esque duels and Fire Emblem-like strategy battles that take place as well. Mitsumete Knight R is a spinoff of sorts, but it's a different game entirely, and honestly, not nearly as good. ???, a Youtube+TV Trope user has started translating a few things here and there, but due to the game's massive number of events, nothing may come to fruition for a good while. That said, Godspeed to that person and any others who assist in MK's translation.
Tales of Destiny: Director's Cut RPG It's no secret that the original Tales of Destiny on the PS1 didn't stand the test of time very well (its butchered American version didn't help either) and now it's more like a relic than a classic. The PS2 remake has revamped almost everything: rewritten script, new graphics, revamped world map, more dungeons and sidequests, convenient skit activation. A solid RPG by all standards. Active project
Tales of Hearts RPG

The game that Tales series producer wants you to play but Namco executives don't. So Tales fan Kajitani-Eizen and a his team accepted the challenge. The game itself is not far from the series' formula, except for the battle system, which is a fusion of mechanics from Destiny PS2, Innocence and some of its own stuff (like Connect Command). That's enough freshness for a franchise like Tales.

Be careful when you pick up the CG Movie Edition. Its cutscenes can fall steep into the Uncanny Valley at times.

Active project. Demo patch. Translator's Cut planned to fix bugs and rebalance the game as an optional patch.
Valkyria Chronicles 3 Turn-Based Strategy Since Sega cares more about Sonic and abandoned the plan to bring the last entry of this X-Com style trilogy over to the West, the fans had to take that upon themselves. Units now have individual progression and newly added Special Powers, Scout class is nerfed to prevent being overpowered, but then so are Orders. Active project. Only main translation done. No editing done yet. Text insertion is slow but progressing.
